This is another one of those photo assignments that I give to myself to keep myself “sharp” in between the real photo assignments. This time it was an idea to photograph some locally sourced “lokal fødevarer” a producer of organic garlic. These photoshoots have also opened up a niche to sell them to various picture libraries I conribute to.

After visiting some local food festivals to get some ideas and hand out some business cards, I came across “Hvidløg og Vin”. In yet another bad “Danglish” episode this came across to me as; "mmmm they make wine out of garlic” that has to be interesting and worth photographing!
After a language reset, it turns out that they produce organic garlic, as I have found out so many times during my time here, Danes’ English, even if they think it is poor, it is always going to be better than my bad Danish, it was made clear that the wine and the garlic were entirely separate….wine importing and the garlic business.
I was welcome to photograph their organic garlic farm but I had missed that year's harvest, it was September. The garlic is picked late June early July then dried for a few weeks before been sorted and sold. But I was welcome to return the following year.
I planned my return but the farm address didn’t get a mention on my GPS I got close enough then my “Danglish” got me the last 200 meters or so.
The smell of the garlic was all I needed to find my way. On arrival I was shown the picking, storage, sorting and packing and I was made to feel very welcome.

For my pictures I concentrated on a bunch of partly dried garlic bulbs with their stalks still attached persuading the farmer to wear an old blue tunic I had bought with me and hold a bunch of his fresh organic garlic bulbs, that I thought would make a nice contrast with the colours I was anticipating. I was happy with the look and what I came away with my expectations of the theme of "lokal fødvarer".
